Privacy policy

Draft. Kuvake is in development and is not yet sold. This page describes how it works today and what is planned. Points marked to be confirmed will be settled before the paid version is offered.
In short
- Your photos are edited on your own device. They are not uploaded to us.
- Your edits, and the photo you last opened, are saved in your browser, on your device. We cannot see them.
- We set no cookies and show no advertising.
- We count visits without identifying anyone.
Who is responsible
Kuvake consists of this website, kuvake.app, and the editor at app.kuvake.app. Both are published by Vapaaradikaali, a Finnish company with the business ID 2302852-4 (VAT number FI23028524). It is the data controller. Its postal address and a contact address for privacy questions are to be confirmed and will be given here.
Your photos
Editing happens in your browser. A photo you open is read from your device and processed there, camera raw files included. The picture you work on, and every version of it that the editor produces, stays on your device. Nothing in the editor sends a photo, or any part of one, to our server or to anyone else.
The editor also offers sample photos of ours, which your browser downloads from us like any other file of the site.
What is stored on your device
So that your work survives closing the app, the editor keeps the following in your browser's storage for app.kuvake.app:
- the photo you last opened from your device, so that it is still there when you return. Opening another replaces it;
- the settings of each edit, its undo history and your snapshots, per photo;
- which tool you had open, and switches such as the grid;
- whether automatic refresh is on.
None of this leaves your device, and we have no access to it. You can remove them at any time by clearing the data of app.kuvake.app in your browser. This website itself stores nothing on your device. The cookie policy lists each item.
What our server receives
Like every website, this one and the editor receive a request each time your browser loads a file from them. The server keeps a log of these requests, to keep the service running and to deal with misuse. Each line holds:
- your IP address, in full;
- the date and time, the file asked for, and whether it was delivered;
- the page that led your browser here, if it says so;
- the name and version of your browser.
The log is kept for 14 days and then deleted. It stays on the server: it is not copied into backups and not passed to anyone.
The server is in Helsinki, Finland, on hardware of Hetzner Online GmbH.
Statistics
We plan to count how the site is used with Matomo, an analytics tool, set up so that it cannot identify you. It is not yet switched on. When it is:
- it will set no cookies and store nothing on your device;
- the last two bytes of your IP address will be removed before anything is stored, so that an address such as 203.0.113.42 is kept as 203.0.0.0;
- it will record pages opened and features used, not photos and not edits;
- the figures will not be combined with data from other sites or sold.
The figures will be kept on our own server, not with an analytics company.
What we do not do
- No accounts: there is nothing to sign up for and no profile of you.
- No advertising and no advertising trackers.
- No AI on your photos, and no use of them to train or improve anything. We never receive them.
- No files loaded from other companies' servers: fonts, scripts and images all come from kuvake.app and app.kuvake.app.
Payments
Nothing is sold yet. When licences are offered, payment will be handled by a payment provider that will be named here, together with what it receives.
Why we may process this, and your rights
The server log and the anonymous statistics rest on our legitimate interest in running, securing and improving the service. Under the EU's General Data Protection Regulation you may ask what personal data we hold about you, have it corrected or erased, object to its use or ask for its use to be restricted. Given how little we hold, the honest answer will usually be an IP address in a log, if that.
You may also complain to a data protection authority. In Finland that is the Office of the Data Protection Ombudsman, tietosuoja.fi.
Changes
This page is revised whenever the way Kuvake handles data changes. The date at the top shows the latest revision.
